"I want to extract harmony from the earth to unify it with my feeling for art." César Manrique | Haria
Haria, or 'the village of one thousand palm trees', is the capital of the municipality of the same name and is characterised by its beautiful landscapes and crystal clear waters at Orzola. Although the pre-Spanish origins of the name of Haria are unknown, it is known that its name comes from a phonetic degeneration of the term 'faria', used in the times of the conquest.
The municipality suffered various invasions from outside and from pirate attacks. The most devastating occurred in 1586, in which all the palm trees were burned - fortunately they recovered. One story has it that a palm was planted for every baby girl born in the village and two for a boy.
Market day is Saturday where you will find genuine local crafts at the stall in the square - they usually finish by 3pm. Ignacio has his office in the square - very handy between the cash machine and the bar. He has an ISDN internet connection and a spare PC so you can check your emails for about 5 euros per hour. He also has a permanent exhibition of paintings by his brother which is worth checking out.
