La Fundacion - swimming pool

"I was unable to imagine the success of this house since for me it was so natural."

César Manrique

The house that César built spreads over an outflow of volcanic lava from the eruptions occurring on the island in the period from 1730 to 1736. César Manrique chose this site on his return from New York, when he decided to settle in Lanzarote for good. In 1968, he began to build this, his own domestic architectural work. Heaven knows how he got planning permission. The building, erected over five very large, natural, volcanic bubbles, has two levels. The Via Integrativa takes place in the bubble ('burbujas') in the lower level - the pool is pictured.
Six months before he died in a car crash outside his house he instituted the building as the headquarters the César Manrique Foundation. The objectives of the Foundation are:
  • To preserve, study and disseminate the work and artistic legacy of César Manrique.
  • Promote artistic activity and cultural reflection.
  • Carry out activities to enhance both the conservation of the natural environment and its sustainable transformation, along with the organisation of the territory.
  • Encourage studies and initiatives addressing the relationships between art and nature.
